'Shetland Pony Grand National' Steeplechase at the Canterbury Royal Show on Show day —
Friday 13th November, 3.10 — 3.30pm., 2009.— In the Main Oval (Stable Mate Arena)

ponies racing

This year is the 11th running of the Shetland Pony Grand National Steeplechase which has grown in popularity over the years to become one of the major attractions at the show, which appeals to both children and adults alike. It is hard to say who enjoys the race the most - the ponies, the riders, the commentators or the spectators. Make sure you reserve your place at the ringside to experience this great spectacle and get caught up in the fun and excitement.

The field this year consists of 11 runners (9 Geldings and 2 Mares):
  1. Alby: Skewbald having his first start, so lacking race day experience. Long-shot of the field.

  2. Archie: The cutest Dun skewbald. He has had more starts than any other runner.

  3. Basil: The very handsome Skewbald of solid build. Lazy but with right rider could surprise.

  4. C.J.: Big, black, laid back with wicked sense of humour. Would need luck in the running.

  5. Foxy: Tall skewbald, built like a racehorse. A sound safe bet, worth backing each way.

  6. Horace: The geriatric of the field. In top notch condition and a great stayer despite his age.

  7. Muffin: Black mare who loves Foxy and will be right up there at the finish again.

  8. Poppy: Skewbald mare, just back from the broodmare paddock. Races well fresh.

  9. Rowan: Black gelding having his first start. No form to indicate his ability.

  10. Sam: Brown/Black great learners pony. Surprised everyone by winning the race last year

  11. Stormy: Muffin's big brother, with excellent form and great sprinting power. A safe bet.
